Dorr Mountain, Acadia National Park

5.0
#15 of 15 in Outdoors in Acadia National Park
The narrow ridge of Dorr Mountain features four hiking trails offering scenic views of the surroundings. All routes pass through wooded areas, with some sections running along streams and across valleys, and others dropping over boulders and big rocks. Occasionally, you will have to walk on wooden planks placed across beaver ponds. Once you reach the summit at 365 m (1,270 ft) above sea level, take in the panoramic view of the ocean and offshore islands. The most interesting and challenging trail works its way up a steep ascent made easier by some granite and iron steps. • A challenging hike for a 58 and 60 year old couple but we really enjoyed it and the views are worth it. You can't drive to the top of Dorr and I thought some of the views were better than Cadillac Mou...  more »
  • We mounted by the Kirk Dideriech Climb from the parking lot on route 3 near the Tarn. We went back down by the South Ridge and then the loop to the tarn. While the aisle is an almost vertical ascent in markets of granite, the descent is longer but easier. However, the last part is fun, because we walk stone in stone along the pond. At the top, the view is beautiful. My downside is that route 3 is very busy, so half of the ascent and a part of the end is to the sound of the cars. This contrasts with the usual calm of the Park.

Where to stay in Acadia National Park

A few campgrounds sit inside the boundaries of Acadia National Park. Camping is available in the park throughout the year, but most campgrounds are only open during summer. There are plenty of campgrounds around Mt. Desert Island, on which Acadia sits, and more located on the mainland within easy driving distance of the bridge to the island. For creature comforts, a lively atmosphere, and easy access to the park, look for a hotel, inn, or bed and breakfast in bustling Bar Harbor, which also has restaurants and shops. Quieter Northeast Harbor, which actually sits on the southwest corner of Mt. Desert Island, has a few quaint inns and bed and breakfasts that offer a more rustic experience than staying in Bar Harbor. If you plan to visit Acadia in summer, book your accommodation as far in advance as possible.
