Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park

4.9
#1 of 170 in Parks in Maine
Perched upon Mount Desert Island in one of Maine's most popular parks, Cadillac Mountain is replete with hiking trails and scenery. The mountain, standing 470 m (1,528 ft) high, is one of the tallest on the United States' eastern seaboard. Here, you can get a glimpse of distant Canadian Nova Scotia in clear weather. You can either hike or drive the 5.6 km (3.5 mi) long road to the summit, which features views of the Porcupine Islands and ocean. Multiple viewing points and pullout spots are available along the way. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the park's signature granite slabs and rock formations rising from the ground. Where to stay in Acadia National Park

A few campgrounds sit inside the boundaries of Acadia National Park. Camping is available in the park throughout the year, but most campgrounds are only open during summer. There are plenty of campgrounds around Mt. Desert Island, on which Acadia sits, and more located on the mainland within easy driving distance of the bridge to the island. For creature comforts, a lively atmosphere, and easy access to the park, look for a hotel, inn, or bed and breakfast in bustling Bar Harbor, which also has restaurants and shops. Quieter Northeast Harbor, which actually sits on the southwest corner of Mt. Desert Island, has a few quaint inns and bed and breakfasts that offer a more rustic experience than staying in Bar Harbor. If you plan to visit Acadia in summer, book your accommodation as far in advance as possible.
