Kolmanskop Ghost Town, Luderitz

4.6
#1 of 13 in Historic Sites in Namibia
Gradually swallowed by the Namib desert's sand storms, Kolmanskop Ghost Town once served as a thriving diamond mining community established by the colonial Germans. The town's supplies were slowly exhausted during World War I, and the site was completely abandoned in 1954. Take a guided tour to explore the alleys and streets covered knee-deep in sand, as well as the surrounding public institutions and facilities. The weather can get very hot here, so carry extra water and sunscreen with you. Make Kolmanskop Ghost Town a part of your Luderitz vacation plans using our Luderitz trip itinerary planner.

  • The history of sand over House in Kolmanskop is intriguing. In 1908 were in the desert of Namibia discovered diamonds in various places. One of the towns that arose to accommodation and entertainment for miners to offer the worst hit by the influx was Kolmanskop. This town is located in the middle of the desert and was taken to German example built. At its peak there was a hospital, a dancing, a power plant, a school, a bowling alley, a theatre and a railway. 10 years later at the end of the first world war, the diamond price huge, which ushered the beginning of the end for Kolmanskop. In 1936 were larger quantities and more valuable diamonds found close to the coast. The consequence: the miners moved to the newly founded city of Oranjemund. 1950 sand over House in Kolmanskop was completely abandoned and fell against the prey to the desert sands. Slowly, but steadily the buildings filled with desert sand. We have visited times square with a very experienced guide. He spoke English but did this on a clear, slow way. Understandable for everyone. Pleasant to listen to. At our visit there was a violent wind, which the visit a bit difficult. Definitely recommended!!!

  • This is such a fascinating place and so easy accessible just outside Luderitz that it warrants a must see tag. Walking through this ghost town takes you back many moons giving you an idea of how these...  more »
  • An impressive experience, as the once vibrant, larger settlement of German origin is slowly sinking in the sand. Parts have been restored, else is left to nature. Excellent guided tours (the German Gisela make!). After the guided tour you should take the time, to explore the place (where it allows and is safe). A quaint Café completes the visit

Where to stay in Luderitz

Surrounded by deserts and inhospitable ocean waters, the only accommodations in Lüderitz lie in the city center--with the exception of an inexpensive campsite on Shark Island near the harbor. As with most of the structures in Lüderitz, lots of the guesthouses and lodges feature a colonial Art Nouveau style, and will put you in close proximity to seafood restaurants. If you're up for a more luxurious stay, book a hotel room near an isolated beach in the southwestern part of the town, with sea views, an outdoor pool, and a wooden pier.
