Diaz Point, Luderitz

3.6
#2 of 10 in Things to do in Luderitz
Admire pristine nature at Diaz Point, the tip of the Lüderitz Peninsula and part of the area's nature reserve. Protruding some 50 m (164 ft) into the South Atlantic, the point offers exciting and sweeping views of the ocean. A 53 m (174 ft) tall red and white banded lighthouse guards the tip, but is unfortunately not accessible to the public. When the tide goes down, look out beyond the lighthouse to see the Diaz Cross, erected on the spot where Portuguese navigator Bartholomew Diaz first set up a stone cross on the headland in 1488. Keep your eyes peeled and you might also see Cape fur seals basking on the rocks. A visit to Diaz Point represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Luderitz tour itinerary maker site to plot your vacation.

  • The road from Luderitz, although not paved, is in very good condition. Although the bridge/boardwalk is destroyed, even the elderly can quite easily walk round it and up the stairs to the cross. Was v...  more »

Across the Bay are penguins; a bridge that is defective but currently leads to Diaz Point. Whoever wants to can get but relatively easily over stones monument

  • Nice place to take a walk or just get your 'seaview' on. Very weather dependent. The wind tends to really kick up in the afternoon so you may want to get out here early on. There's a bar that we didn'...  more »

Where to stay in Luderitz

Surrounded by deserts and inhospitable ocean waters, the only accommodations in Lüderitz lie in the city center--with the exception of an inexpensive campsite on Shark Island near the harbor. As with most of the structures in Lüderitz, lots of the guesthouses and lodges feature a colonial Art Nouveau style, and will put you in close proximity to seafood restaurants. If you're up for a more luxurious stay, book a hotel room near an isolated beach in the southwestern part of the town, with sea views, an outdoor pool, and a wooden pier.
