Fish River Canyon, Namibia

4.5
#4 of 31 in Nature in Namibia
Challenge yourself as you hike through 1.5 billion years of geological history at Fish River Canyon, the world's second-largest canyon. Take an intense 85 km (53 mi) trail through the gigantic 550 m (1,804 ft) deep, 27 km (17 mi) wide, and 160 km (100 mi) long ravine, featuring some awe-inspiring scenery, with stony formations covered by drought-resistant plants. Cut by the longest interior river in Namibia--the intermittently flowing Fish River--the canyon features hard gneiss bedrocks and awe-inspiring horizontal dolomite strata. The gorge is accessible only from May to mid-September, due to unbearable temperatures at other times of the year. The Fish River Trail usually takes five days to complete. • We have only a portion of the Fish River Canyon visited but it was phenomenally beautiful. Here feel just how small you are. Every turn that you see is different. There was little water in the canyon and I can imagine how it must have been with plenty of water. Too bad you on the pictures the grandeur and sense of depth not for guests at home. Definitely recommended!!!

  • After the long journey on the inevitable dirt roads we reach the viewpoint in the most panoramic of the canyon. The location is the best you could ask for. In fact, just in front of the belvedere, one can admire a gigantic loop of the River with a thousand colors of the land result in millions of years of erosion. The advice is to get there early because in the afternoon when we showed up, we had the Sun planted right in front of substantially limiting the photo shoot. Although far from the beaten track of Namibia is certainly worth to go so far south to see this beautiful landscape.

  • My first visit since 1968 and boy has it changed. The canyon is still as awesome as before but where there was absolutely nothing before you now have beautiful covered decks from where you can safely ...  more »

  • I would like to point out since this location can't be edited, this is not the start or the view point of the Canyon. To enter the Canyon you need to go through the park gate at Hobas. The Canyon is mesmerizing but not worth it if it's out of your way.
  • Such a beautiful place on earth! Everyone who can should at least once see this canyon.
  • Stunning view of the canyon.
