Twyfelfontein, Damaraland

4.2
#1 of 8 in Things to do in Damaraland
Listed as the country's first World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein contains peculiar rock engravings, petroglyphs, and paintings. Inhabited for more than 6,000 years, the site provided a home for hunter-gatherer tribes that probably conducted shamanistic rituals at this location--their imagery and pictograms remain scattered about. As you explore the protected site, observe the diverse rock art that portrays wild animals, footprints, and symbols of an ancient belief system. only takes about 3/4 hour, an obligatory guide is included in the price. You park up under a shaded parking area and give the car guard a tip when you leave. Very hot as you can imagine. We just went ...  more »

Just a consideration so as not to repeat what has already been written by others: If you are here is because you are, then whether or not fans to the genre, this visit is absolutely not to be missed ... it's a real open air museum

"Petroglyphs" of Twyfelfontein are well worth a visit in Damaraland. For a small price, you gain entry to an area in which several of these "chisel works" under the open sky can be seen. The ~ 5000 year-old pictures could partially very well outlast the time as wind and rain could damage the everywhere surrounding boulders here not frequently. Be easy once researchers and admire a few of the over 1000 exhibits.

It is definitely a place worth visit as you will see and get quality information about the ancient rock engravings. Also the area by itself is quite impressive.

Interesting site with many places to visit nearby.

Twyfelfontein is as fancinating as ever but the roads have never ever been worse! Corrugations that make driving a teeth-rattling nightmare and damage vehicles. Self-drive tourists and guides were complaining wherever we went this past week. Tourism is a major forex earner and job creator - Namibian government please take note. Sadly the badly corrugated tracks are not confined to Twyfelfontein but apply in many places across the country where there are dirt roads, Kunene included. The statement: "If we'd known the roads were so bad, we wouldn't have come" should be taken seriously by those who are meant to maintain tourism routes.
