Twyfelfontein, Damaraland

4.2
#1 of 8 in Things to do in Damaraland
Listed as the country's first World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein contains peculiar rock engravings, petroglyphs, and paintings. Inhabited for more than 6,000 years, the site provided a home for hunter-gatherer tribes that probably conducted shamanistic rituals at this location--their imagery and pictograms remain scattered about. As you explore the protected site, observe the diverse rock art that portrays wild animals, footprints, and symbols of an ancient belief system. • comes with a guide to name give to the former farmhouse from 1904 (source of doubt, these bubbles by the way still today unreliable) - the farmer had always to struggle that the source once bubbled and times not - to the famous rock engravings of the NAMA from before approx. 5000 years ago. Several hundred animals (also steppes atypical like penguins or seals) are childishly naive partly very faithfully depicted - including Otto's Laripou. The guide is any group at the entrance allocated explains (approx. 10,-€/ person) protects the engravings from vandalism and the tourists from dangers like the living Speih Cobra.

  • It is a remote Valley where a lot of cave paintings and petroglyphs, which are heritage. The rock formations are large amount of paintings, some of them very well preserved and some of which can be on a walk through the area. That Yes, you should go well prepared for the heat, since high temperatures are reached: hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothes and muuuuucha water. A highly recommended site.

  • This is the most important atraction in the region, going back thousands of years. The rock paintings depict animals that long have disappeared due to colonialisation and climate change.  more »

  • It is definitely a place worth visit as you will see and get quality information about the ancient rock engravings. Also the area by itself is quite impressive.
  • Interesting site with many places to visit nearby.
  • Twyfelfontein is as fancinating as ever but the roads have never ever been worse! Corrugations that make driving a teeth-rattling nightmare and damage vehicles. Self-drive tourists and guides were complaining wherever we went this past week. Tourism is a major forex earner and job creator - Namibian government please take note. Sadly the badly corrugated tracks are not confined to Twyfelfontein but apply in many places across the country where there are dirt roads, Kunene included. The statement: "If we'd known the roads were so bad, we wouldn't have come" should be taken seriously by those who are meant to maintain tourism routes.
  • Centrally located to great historical places
  • An one hour guided tour to see gravings, interesting.
