Toronto Zoo, Toronto

4.0
#1 of 60 in Outdoors in Toronto
Canada's largest animal sanctuary, Toronto Zoo shelters over 5,000 animals occupying habitats from seven different zoogeographic regions. Head to the indoor tropical pavilions to see creatures from warmer climates, and then venture to the outdoor habitats, where larger mammals roam spacious areas that mimic their natural environments. Learn about your favorite animals by attending a daily zookeeper talk, and explore exhibits dedicated to baby polar bears, rhinos, pandas, and white lions. Don't miss the award-winning tundra exhibit, designed to teach visitors about the habitats of snow geese, reindeer, snowy owls, and Arctic foxes and wolves. Check the website for available activities, events, and educational programs. For Toronto Zoo and beyond, use our Toronto tour planner to get the most from your Toronto vacation.

  • If you're in Toronto, this is a must see. The zoo has several different animals separated by "regions". The Tundra and Sea regions were the most interesting in my opinion. You can see that the animals are very well taken care of, specially because they run a lot of researches with them. The giant Pandas are very nice to see as well. Unfortunately, they're leaving Toronto in the next couple of months (I believe March 2018).
  • I visited a week ago on a cold and rainy day, so it wasn't crowded. Most people were there for the pandas and they are very cute. Lots of information about them and volunteers at info booths before you get to the enclosure. Signage: keep the paper map handy because some areas aren't marked very well. Education: newer exhibits have a lot of info, older exhibits have very little. As a zoo, I think education is more important than entertainment value. Yes, it's interesting to see rhinos, penguins, and giraffes, but it's important to learn about them too. Otherwise, might as well go to a natural history museum. Time: I spent the whole day here and saw almost everything (except the Canadian area). You can probably visit 1-2 areas in half a day. Facilities: many washrooms and rest spots nearby every exhibit. Food: I went on the weekend and there weren't many choices. I'm glad I packed lunch. Overall: fascinating but needs an upgrade.
  • Really fun zoo to visit. I have been to a couple other zoos with pandas recently (DC and San Diego) and the pandas here were much more active. On top of that, there was a lot to see. The Africa section was a standout. The enclosures were large and there were a lot of animals. Overall it was a fun place to spend the day.
  • Toronto Zoo is one of the great North American zoos. Occupies a huge area and is a lovely walk around the exhibits. My only complaint was that no restaurants or food services were open mid week, but we had brought enough to do. Very few staff in attendance but also very few people. Worth visiting.
  • This place is awesome. The giant pandas are terrific and her almost make you seem like one of their family. The zoo is not crowded at this time of the year and you can explore at an absolute Leisure. The polar bears are cool the snow leopards are interesting and the other animals are very neat to watch.

Where to stay in Toronto

Most visitors stay in the historic neighborhood of Old Toronto, as the central district offers unparalleled access to the best attractions in the city and several metro stations within walking distance. If you're looking for a different taste of Toronto, stay in the trendy neighborhoods of West Queen West or King West Village, popular for their nightlife, arts, and cafe scenes. You can embrace Toronto's multicultural charms by staying in Chinatown, perhaps the city's best location for foodies.
