The Distillery District, Toronto

4.4
Once home to the British Empire's biggest producer of spirits, The Distillery District now represents one of Toronto's top tourist hubs, packed with shops and bars housed inside preserved Victorian-era buildings. This ten-street quarter contains dozens of old warehouses converted into modern art galleries, artist workshops, trendy eateries, and upscale boutiques. A popular gathering place for both tourists and locals, the neighborhood is especially crowded on weekends, when newlyweds come to pose in front of the area's iconic redbrick buildings. Browse the website for upcoming events, which include live jazz performances, food festivals, and art exhibits. The Distillery District is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Toronto Edition.

  • The Dystillery district has great restaurants, stores and special events. A great place for date night, or an afternoon walk with your family.  more »

  • An excellent example of successful reclamation of urban space! Some really impressive historical documentation about the area. Unlike many other places that revive neighborhoods, the Distillery Historical District provides context in a small "museum." Highlights for us are the art gallery and the Spirit of York Distillery. Highly recommend doing the tasting flight at the Spirit of York Distillery! The many other shops are nice but tended to be either too "folk-arty" or woman focused for us. (Think antiques, candles, scarves and jewelry.) I would definitely love to come back when all the holiday decorations are set up. Many of our local friends tell us that it's not too be missed.
  • Beautiful place with highend unique shops. I love the art galleries too. Inside there are a few absolutely amazing restaurants and u love the coffee shop. Very neat art and photography shops everywhere. Great scenery too, a lot of the original factory there including some cool old vehicles. Inside the buildings they have a lot of the original factory machines around. Really Nice, great place.
  • Absolutely beautiful during the winter holidays. There are little huts staggered around the distillery district that sell food, decorations and various other goodies. You will also find many bars in the area for a quick drink. If you visit on the weekend, you will be able to carry alcohol as you visit the different attractions around the establishment. Live music is often played beside the Christmas tree. There is a ferris wheel and a marry go round. Lots of places to enjoy- including an outdoor bar with many different cabins serving tasty alcoholic drinks. Awesome place for a date!
  • My wife and I attended a Haunted Walk through the distillery. It was pretty fun and the host was excellent. However, be aware that the distillery area is occupied with a TON of restaurants and stores. Being from out of town, we expected a more secluded historic venue but that was not the case. I can imagine if you are coming to this area to visit and possibly grab a quick bite to eat, it would be very nice to look at the old architecture.
  • Great place for a walk! However, the reception (a blond but didn't get her name) at Arta Gallery was extremely rude sown left before having a chance to look through all the paintings on offer. Rude enough so we would not return. Otherwise the other restaurants and shops offered really unique items and historical background.

Where to stay in Toronto

Most visitors stay in the historic neighborhood of Old Toronto, as the central district offers unparalleled access to the best attractions in the city and several metro stations within walking distance. If you're looking for a different taste of Toronto, stay in the trendy neighborhoods of West Queen West or King West Village, popular for their nightlife, arts, and cafe scenes. You can embrace Toronto's multicultural charms by staying in Chinatown, perhaps the city's best location for foodies.
