The Basilica Cathedral of St. John The Baptist, St. John's

4.7
#3 of 8 in Historic Sites in St. John's
Built between 1839 and 1855 in Lombard-Romanesque style, The Basilica Cathedral of St. John The Baptist dominates the skyline of the city and impresses visitors with its striking Altar of Sacrifice alongside one of the most valuable pieces of statuary--The Dead Christ. See the play of colors from the brightly stained glass and let your gaze slowly pass to the golden brown ceiling where the arms of the Latin cross meet. The church acts as a symbol for the Irish heritage in Canada, with many Irish contributing to the build of the religious structure. Don't forget to stop by the museum and take a guided tour of exhibits including religious and historic artifacts, furniture, and decorations spanning several periods. Beautiful structure with art from different parts of western Europe. The Easter Vigil and Midnight Mass ceremonies are memorable masses to see.

My favorite place in St. Johns! I don't go to church regularly, but when I'm here I wouldn't want to miss Sunday mass. It's quite an experience in this place! Thank you to all the wonderful people who keep this place alive. And a loving hello to the beautiful ladies in the gift shop! I will probably never forget you 😌
