Signal Hill, St. John's

4.4
Take a steep hike up to Signal Hill, a hilltop affording incredible views over the bay and offering an insight into the rich history of the military communications it once provided. During different times of year, the lookout provides views of whales and icebergs, which can also be enjoyed while walking the trails around the site. Examine the onsite museum detailing the work that went on here during the great Seven Years’ War. Hiking to the top isn’t essential, as you can drive, but if you choose to walk, wear sturdy footwear and consider bringing a picnic if the weather’s good; there are no refreshments available at the top. • Staff is very friendly and helpful, and the 24 hour front desk is always staffed which is wonderful. Parking can be limited, so you may need to park on the street some distance from your unit. You should ensure that you're good with climbing stairs - the rooms on the upper floors are only accessible by stairs. If you think you may have problems with this, I recommend letting them know in advance - there are 1st floor suites available at street level. There is a free continental breakfast served from 7:30 - 9:30 and the coffee has take-out cups in case you want to take yours on the road. The location is incredible. You're right at the base of Signal Hill and could walk to the heritage site (be prepared for a hike - it's a steep incline), or down to Water Street to take in the shops or restaurants. Highly recommended.
  • Great location, we walked up to Signal Hill on the scenic trail. It took about an hour. Walking downtown to Water and George Street is 20-25 minutes. Nice, comfortable bedrooms and large, clean bathrooms. Definitely recommend for a visit to St. John's
  • Good option for a quick stay in St John's. Super close to signal hill and a short walk to Quidi Vidi lake where there's a great walking path for an evening stroll. The rooms are individual rooms of a townhouse, so essentially you're sharing a townhouse with up to 3 other guests. If you're on the top floor it's a few flights of stairs to climb with baggage. There is a well equipped kitchen that is shared amongst the guests. No one used it during our stay.
  • I liked it here. The room was decent. I slept well. The staff were very good. It was a really good location too!
  • Visited St.John's twice and stayed at hometel twice. Great Location, nice service.

Where to stay in St. John's

To appreciate the history and colorful architecture of North America's oldest colonial city, there's no better place to stay than in the city center. This popular neighborhood displays the city's iconic, brightly painted Victorian houses, with a selection of guesthouses and inns clustered around Government House. Staying just west of the city center, near the Memorial University of Newfoundland, works as a pleasant alternative, with the expansive Pippy Park right at your doorstep.
