Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, Rocky Harbour

Built in the 19th century, this lighthouse is part of a national park that offers many walking trails, scenic viewpoints, and picnic areas. • We were lucky enough to be able to get in on a tour with a Parks Canada guide on the day we visited. The historical significance of the lighthouse and the role it played in the lives of the people in the surrounding area was fascinating. There is plenty of parking at the site as well as accessible washroom facilities. There is a small but interesting museum on the main floor of the residence and a staircase (not accessible to wheelchairs) to the light tower.
  • You can go to through the lighthouse but can't go up to the top. Good history of the light house keeper and how government treated their workers. Hard work to keep the lighthouse going. No gift shop here. Beautiful scenery and very good picnic area with tables. Guide is humorous and very informative.
  • Showed up just in time for the tide pool tour. Short little walk to the beach after a brief instruction. The guide was awesome! Loud enough for those in the back to hear him clearly and he did a great job of explaining what kind ocean life we were looking for. He kept everyone engaged and active in their search. The lighthouse museum was very interesting but I was a little disappointed that visitors weren't allowed to see in the lighthouse. Still, a very cool place and you can't beat a free activity!
  • There is a short easy hike around the lighthouse. The small museum was closed when I was there. There is some info on the family who once lived there. It was ok, and we did it because we were close by, but it paled in comparison to the other hikes on this trip, and there was not much of a view. Best shots of the lighthouse are from the parking lot.
  • Nice place to stop at in Gros Morne, is ran by parks Canada. Staff are very friendly, know what they're talking about and can speak both English and French like most parks Canada sites. They have 'activities' like finding creatures by the ocean when the tide is down then regrouping to discuss findings. Has a few lookouts where you can get some pretty good pictures too. This place is more interesting than most 'museum' like places.
