Skerwink Trail, Port Rexton

4.9
#1 of 25 in Trails in Newfoundland
Historical heritage and natural beauty collide at Skerwink Trail, a 5.3 km (3.2 mi) coastal hike along cliff tops and beaches. Begin your route by tracing the old railroad bed and then head up the ancient sedimentary rock to Skerwink Head where you will be met by views of Trinity Harbour. As waves crash against the rocks look out at Fort Point lighthouse, where in 1938 the sea claimed the lives of all aboard the Marion Rogers schooner. This trail is rated moderate to difficult and there are no bathroom facilities. Allow two to three hours for your hike, and be sure to bring water. This is a 5.3km loop trail that took us about 2.5 hours due to stopping at the scenic areas. Much of the trail is very well maintained, we saw some guys working on it when we were there, with boardwal...  more »

This a top 10 (or is it 25?) hike in Canada. I'm not sure I would rate it that high but it was a lovely hike. There are some wonderful views on the Coastal Trail on the way up but trees got in the way...  more »

Awesome trail! I had a couple from Winnipeg visiting the area and we hiked the trail on May 9th, 2017. We actually did it in reverse but I'm sure the Trail would be spectacular in either direction. There was still some residual snow on the trail from the excessive amount we had over this winter but, it was still in pretty good shape. We saw an otter on a chunk of sea ice between the Look out trail and Sam White's cove. There were several ice bergs caught in all the pack ice surrounding the area. It took us about 2.5 hours to complete the circuit at a moderate pace with plenty of stops for taking pictures.

It's a well maintained trail in the area but we found the trails around St. John's, in gros morne and around twillingate to be much nicer in terms of views and more enjoyable all around

Beautiful trail. Great view of the water, few icebergs, great nature.

A stunningly scenic trail, but may be too difficult for some. The spires of rock next to the coast were amazing to see, along with the beautiful forests and vistas. It is quite hilly though, even though there are stairs at most of them that help, making it difficult for the more elderly hikers. It gets quite close to the cliff edges at times, so I wouldn't recommend the hike for those afraid of heights, but if you stay on the path you should be very safe. It is quite long as well, but there are benches every so often for resting. I would allot approximately 2 hours for first timers. It was definitely worth the struggle to see the amazing views.

Beautiful views included glimpses of wales, seabirds, and closer observations of the forest revealed unique habitat. The trail was a bit challenging at times but we'll maintained boardwalks and stairs provided safe pace. Views were breathtaking.. And so we're a couple of the climbs.
