Skerwink Trail, Port Rexton

4.9
#1 of 63 in Trails in Newfoundland
Historical heritage and natural beauty collide at Skerwink Trail, a 5.3 km (3.2 mi) coastal hike along cliff tops and beaches. Begin your route by tracing the old railroad bed and then head up the ancient sedimentary rock to Skerwink Head where you will be met by views of Trinity Harbour. As waves crash against the rocks look out at Fort Point lighthouse, where in 1938 the sea claimed the lives of all aboard the Marion Rogers schooner. This trail is rated moderate to difficult and there are no bathroom facilities. Allow two to three hours for your hike, and be sure to bring water. • The Skeriwink Trail is truly beautiful. It follows the coast with huge cliffs and big vistas. We saw numerous wales in the distance. It took about 2 hours and was relatively easy - even for mid-60 yea...  more »
  • We hiked this trail and it took far longer than the literature said because we had to keep stopping to admire the views. It is a well maintained trail and well signposted. We saw beluga whales at Dog ...  more »
  • We'd read so much about the Skerwink that we had to try it. We're experienced hikers and did it in the recommended clockwise direction. Given the long descent towards the end it was a good decision. A...  more »

  • One of many excellent trails in the Hike Discovery trail network. Skerwink is by far the most popular and the parking area can be crowded in mid summer. (The Fox Island trail nearby and Murphy's Cove trail in Port Union are excellent alternative hikes that are rarely busy.) This 5.3 km trail features excellent coastal sections with views of sea stacks and surrounding villages from across the water. There is a steep side trail near the end that leads up to a lookout providing 360 degree views.
  • Amazing hike with lots of great photo opportunities. The path was well maintained and we even had a bald eagle following us during our hike.
  • Such a wonderful, well-maintained, scenic trail. It took us two hours to complete on a dry trail with multiple stops at the vista points. We highly recommend this trail! Sad to say that we didn't see the eagle(s) or icebergs from here (yes, they are still around this peninsula) but did see a whale or two at play.
  • This loop is awesome. The terrain is varying and offers plenty of scenic views. I asked my wife to marry me here. There are these cool growths that look like little goblin huts. As pictured.
  • Loved this trail! Great views, well maintained. Took us about 2 hours in total, but we sat at a few places to enjoy. The gulls are gliding right by the trail...neat place.
